The Cumulus Factory. Take a peak in Adina’s Home.

I have followed The Cumulus Factory in Instagram and Facebook for a while but never really stopped to look around. I just always new I loved the images I saw and the cushions were always divine.
Then I received an email from the lovely Adina and I just knew my awesome readers would want to know about this girl, her shop and her new project with a couple of friends.

Hi there! I’m Adina, and I run The Cumulus Factory (http://cumulusfactory.com). I design and sew cushions of all sorts, in Sydney, Australia. Step into my apartment!
I love cooking, even though I rarely have enough time for it. Whether it’s a familiar or new recipe I’m cooking, I go into somewhat of a happy trance once I start chopping. Creating food is not so different from creating cushions! N.B. I have a thing for IKEA…
My partner Rob and I made our couch last year. We sanded and painted pallets, bought huge slabs of foam, and stitched up the covers. The whole thing took over 10 months – a testament to how hard it is to complete your own creative projects when you’re busy designing and sewing for others too! Of course it took me another month or so to get around to making the 4 cushions sitting on the couch.
Welcome to my sewing studio! This is where a lot of the Cumulus Factory magic happens. I also do a lot of my brainstorming while asleep or in the shower, and a lot of planning happens on the couch. My wonderful Elnita sewing machine was my mum’s – we’ve dated it to around the late 70s or early 80s (if any readers have more information, I’d love to know!). Works like a charm when I remember to oil it!

I recently returned from 3 months travel around South America. I found so much inspiration there – the people, the textiles, the techniques. I also posted a whole lot of textiles back to myself from Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. I’ve only just started playing with these textiles, and I clearly have plenty of fun ahead of me!

During my trip, I had plenty of time to make big plans and dream up collaborations. One sleepless, cold night in Peru, I thought about joining forces with my friend (and amazing photographer) Kristina Childs. The result of this dream is our series of 4 photos from Kristina’s travels around Thailand, digitally printed onto fabric.
Titled ‘Oh The Places You’ll Go’. They are limited edition and available until December 4th through Kickstarter.com  We’re really excited about this project, and if you have 2 minutes spare, check out the video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngQ_iDg9NEA)!
I hope you’ve enjoyed this peek into my home and life!

  1. Recently, a local blogger from Sydney visited the Gold Coast and held workshops on DIY and crafts, and one of the sessions was sewing cushions. It covers from choosing the fabric to fit the color scheme of your house, and even the texture. It was a great and well-talked event in Gold Coast and I know some of my staff actually are keeping a lookout for the next session of the workshop.
