JAPANDI AN INTERIOR DESIGN TREND FOR 2017 – 2018
I always enjoy following the Interior Trends from Europe and US and seeing how we adapt them to our Australian way of life.
Its not that we change them, its more that we only take on a certain amount of the trends on offer and we change them in to a more understated version of themselves so they are more easily adapted to our relaxed way of life.
Trend
I think this is why the Japandi (Japanese/ Scandi Fusion) trend will work so well for us here in Australia. It works on the ideals of Wabi Sabi, a design principle that uses Characteristics of asymmetry, roughness, simplicity, economy, austerity, modesty, intimacy, and appreciation of the ingenuity of natural objects and their processes. Or you could simply say “flawed beauty” or the “Imperfectly Perfect”
Japandi is a new style that has been rearing its head since late in 2016. It has been a slow burn as the homewares and furniture that support this look have taken their time arriving onto our shores and into our interior phsyche.
The neutral tones of the Japandi look have been quietly sitting along the washed pastels that have taken centre stage for the first half 0f 2017 and as a softer more muted palette begins to evolve, Japandi will become a stronger force in our decorating arsenal.
Hard Surfaces
The hard surface colour palette will be focused on the theory of Bold Simplicity. Using a range of nuetrals with the addition of blond timbers (similar to those from the Scandi themes) or bamboo, with strong dark greiges or blacks to punch through and bring the look together. The addition of colour will be drawn from the soft pastels or sage greems that are available around us as we speak.

Interior Decor
Homewares and Furniture are an important feature for the Japandi theme. They are the story tellers for this mostly minimalist look. Focusing on textures and man made goodies like ceramics and paper designs, you will be able to allow this look unfold in your home with ease. This is the theme that helps you support the Makers and Creatives. As always it is important to Mix these mostly man made items with your existing decor to make the look personal but maybe consider putting some of your items away for a rainy day to keep the mix, low key.
Tell me what you think about this new style in the comments.
