No Air-Conditioning for a Year.
I am a little bit excited, our new home is getting closer to being finished and its really becoming a reality. One of the biggest decisions Hubby and I have made is to hold off from
installing air-conditioning straight away. Our home needed to have a 6 star energy rating to pass council and we have white…….well everything, including our roof, walls, cabinets and exterior and we have concrete flooring. With all this being said we have made allowances to install air-conditioning later but wanted the option to choose what style of unit we felt was the most necessary for how our home and how our house would perform in each season on its own. We are also trying to be a little bit more environmentally conscious which includes solar panels and energy efficiency.
I must now mention that my Husband is extremely tech savvy and up until last week had thought some ceiling fans would be “just fine” for cooling and a gas point will be “just fine” for the heating but then stumbled upon Actron an air-conditioning company that offer an App to control your air con, fan and heating. Guess what, we he now wants to “get this one” because it looks perfect.
I must admit the option to control my air flow from anywhere and turn on or off zones even when I am out sounds a little bit exciting and very futuristic.
The company is Actron Air and they are Australian Owned which means the Units are Australian Made specifically to our Australian climate.
They have won an award for their ESP Plus which won the inaugural Cool World Award in 2008. This award recognises the ability to significantly and measurably reduce the impact of air conditioning on the environment. This is all making my our decision very easy.
Actron have a great page with tips on how to make the right choice for your air conditioning performance. A comprehensive website and testimonials which always make
my decisions more informed.
I know sitting a year without heating or cooling is for everyone and some of our friends and family think we are crazy but I am sure we will cope with pedestal fans, the pool and spray bottles and in the winter our gas point and jumpers will have to work for us.
That is what I am telling myself now anyway
Tell me, have you ever considered trialling your homes weather
efficiency before installing your chosen air con?
Would an app controlled air conditioner change your mind?
hi kristie. We built without air con for three reasons. 1. cost saving. 2. I personally dislike it / enviro sensitivity 3. if the house operated well through good design it wouldn’t be needed.
I’m happy to report that no. 3 is the reason we are still without it. there are perhaps 2 -3 days per year that we might have appreciated artificial cooling; otherwise the control of onshore ocean breeezes through good window size / placement and house orientation has worked marvelously. We do use fans and have under floor heating / gas for warmth.
Just don’t be overwhelmed after reading my comment but I simply could not stop myself from appreciating this wonderful piece of marvel. What a blog…it traverses you to a whole new progressive world.
