The Chestnut 11, Black Kitchen.
We have been slowly finalising some things to be quoted, yay!
Many of you that have built will probably agree that until the Kitchen colours are sorted the rest of the living area decisions really are difficult. I have always been of the belief that the kitchen decisions are first and the rest of the house will feed off from there.
So we started with a few different things and every decision and image we looked at,
had us both…..yes husband agreed…… in the end…….. after some persuasion……with a twist of his arm, that the kitchen should be black. Every time he rejected something I let him go off and research other options and he would come back saying I think your right (insert crazy roll of the eyes) we have to do that part black.
So here is where we are at.
The sink I want but agree that the square corners will be hard to keep clean so going for something a little more standard……Shame cos I love this.
Please people if you have one like this and you can impart some knowledge I need to hear it.
This tap…….I love it. Its more than the bathtub but its worth it. It will be obvious. It needs to fit in with the look of the kitchen and be stylish and of course functional, oh yes it will be functional.
The very basic isometric drawing of our kitchen as we were nutting things out.
The last idea from Husband was to leave the over heads at the back white and the back bench top white stone but I think we are going to be sticking with black……..everywhere. Except the island which you can see for yourself where we are heading with that.
The side of the drawing is the return desk/study nook in timber also.
Just as a background, our floors are grey concrete and our walls are white and the ceiling is raked from the kitchen up.
So you can see what I am talking about, here is the kicthen part of the plan
Yes I chose my Laundry to be there. I love the laundry of the kitchen its my thing. I have built 2 houses like this now and will not change from it.
I am thinking we will do a timber top but not the waterfall ends and draws up one end and an open bench on the other for chatting ease.

I really really wanted a gold tap but as this house is a 10 year plan I got talked out of it. It would need a heap of upkeep and this house is being designed for ease of living not handwork.
By the way I mentioned last week about the title.
Well Chestnut is what our last name means in Italian and this will be house number 11 for Hubby and I in our 13 years together. Crazy I know but very exciting for us with it being a long term plan. If you know us you can stop laughing at that last comment.
I, for one, love the Laundry off the Kitchen concept. They’re the two places we spend the most of our time (sadly) so they may as well be side by side.
Also loving the colour concept and the timber benchtop. I’m trying to convince my husband that we need the island open at one end, but I’m not winning… Long term plan, what long term plan??!!
Mx
Thanks M, yes that was my point with the laundry and have loved it ever since trying it. Exactly. you what long term plan….;-)
Hooray for Black kitchens! It’s what I’m planning here….though at the rate we’re going you’ll beat me to it! I’ll be following closely!!! LOL! Glad you and your hubby on same page; it has taken me 2 years to get my husband to come over to the ‘dark side’!
I love that sink; Franke? We have put them in several client’s homes (their selection) and all complain about the difficulty in keeping corners clean. Many manufacturers are addressing this and although the top profile is square the base corners have a small radius to ease this issue. Abbey is one brand that has done this.
Love your drawing plan…would you consider stainless steel on cooking wall benchtop? Very practical but black would look stunning!
Last house my laundry ran off the kitchen similarly; wish i could’ve replicated it here…I’m 2000% with you there; it works a trea!
I love the gold accents but it is definitely something of a committment re contuity elsewhere too. I think there will be heaps more of it in the next few years but it’s still a gamble.
Ahhh…the riddle is solved! LOVE it! x KL
Ah KL, my lovely lady with the inside knowledge. I will have to go and check out the Abbey thanks for that info, it is always appreciated. The stainless is something hubby suggested but friends have it and i just always see streaks and mess, watermarks etc……I was thinking given the slightly precious nature of the timber bench I need the other side to be easy upkeep…..Thanks as always.
Re: the SS. It looks icky for a year at least; every scratch and march very obvious but after lots of good use (ie: NOT treating it as precious!) it gains that soft patina that is so stunning. I have had it before and highly recommend if you can survive the break-in period. x KL
We are both designing and renovating our kitchens at the same time! I love the black cabinetry with the wood, it is going to give you some serious wow factor. Iv decided to go with white cabinets mainly because we have such a small space a dark colour would be a bit overpowering. Plus Im a little boring I guess! I intend to get a coloured splashback though – thats going to be my hero piece! Your sketch is a zillion times better than my lame drawings so dont worry :)
Yes Michelle we are, I think thats why I was drawn to your blog….. I think I am happy to go with Black simply beacause this kitchen is going to be so big and in a large area so your right for it not being suited to a smaller kitchen, thats how I would think also. Looking forward to your coloured splash back decision.
love your plans darl – you can never go wrong with a black kitchen! xx
I love how you design your timber top island cabinet. The drawers are at one end to store all the necessities while the other end is great for friends/family to accompany you for a chat while you’re cooking up a stew. The gold tap looks really lavish and attractive too to me, but you are right; if it is for a 10-years plan, then it is a bit too far-fetched. Overall, great layout idea guys!
I like the kitchen sink design.
