Stairs verses walls…..who wins.

I am re posting this as I have found more and more people researching stairs as our blocks are getting smaller and our homes needing to be double storey to accommodate these smaller scaled pieces of land.
I have started this post with a staircase image that has been in my file for years…its my favourite.
I love, that making the staircase a feature is so acceptable.
We have also chatted about this over at the Decorating Forum. You can pop over and see what others had to say here.
The above image shows it could be as simple as making every other area so dramatic you can’t help but notice this staircase for all its glory.
Here are some other ideas for your staircase.
We used to hide the staircase under a mountain of pictures or simply decorate the wall of the stairway rather than treating the stairs themselves as a feature.
But they are a feature and can be with the right view.
How about a non conventional rug runner. In colours that bring the walls down to the treads.

Wallpaper can create an artwork of your risers. Please be careful to consider the right colour with your treads and don’t forget the slight shadow created by the overhang of the treads when deciding.
Get 2 or 3 samples and stick them on your risers for a couple of days before deciding, this one is a little more fiddly than it looks.
…….And when you really can’t decide on a style choose a theme and make it work for an eclectic, quirky feel. I bet you have never considered Wallpaper before.
Decals are another alternative if wallpaper seems a little too permanent.
These Tiles are a great compliment to the style of your home and especially if you have a tiled floor at the base. These tiles perfectly compliment each other and I would have to say most certainly come from the same tile family
Painted Piano stairs
Feature Timber Treads for a natural rustic element to your room and to compliment your natural surroundings.
For me personally I love timber treads when they are surrounded by stark white to really highlight the timber.
If you know me by now, you know I like to mix my Elements.
OK so not something that makes the stairs a feature but some great under stair uses.
Storage drawers or shelves
Instead of the normal door shelves, drawers or cabinets will also be a great use of space.
Maybe a bed in small apartments, this is not for everyone.
If TV is not a big deal in your house this is a great way of hiding it.
I had to show you….I am on the fence about this one…..buzz words…cool, dangerous, clever.
Can you beat a simply stylish staircase with a nice feature on the wall….
Probably not, but at least we tried.

  1. Ohhh, I have grabbed a couple of these for my ideas file thanks!!!! I have a stair case that needs some attention in the very near future. I think the slide one looks like a lot of fun. I can just see my boys flying down that. ;-)

  2. So many great ideas that I’m not sure I could pick only 1 favourite. I loved the zebra carpet- but you knew I would:0 Love the piano keyboard. What kid wouldn’t love that slide. Great blog Elements:)

  3. The under stairs ideas are very innovative. I’ll be showing my brother who lives in a small terrace house in Surry Hills and is in the process of renovating.
